Cinemark

The Cinemark movie theater in the Hampshire Mall is one of the few main stream movie theaters in the Pioneer Valley, and as such one might expect outrageous prices at the box office.  However, Cinemark is one of the most reasonably priced movie theaters that I have ever been too, even offering a $5 Tuesday special where tickets are only $5.25 each.  They also offer a discount (of a dollar) with student IDs from a wide variety of educational institutions – college, high school, middle school – on all the other days.  Still, considering other theaters charge upwards of $10, this is a real deal.

The concession stand, on the other hand, makes up for the low ticket prices.  When you go there, expect to pay a bit of money for popcorn, drinks, candy, or any other movie treats you’re looking for.  They tend to frown on outside food and drinks being brought in to the theaters, so plan accordingly. As is typical of the larger theater complexes, they have a small arcade inside that houses some pretty decent games, mostly DDR and racing type stuff.  Just enough variety to keep you occupied for a coupe of dollars.

Since this is the only commercial theater for some distance, so they tend to get quite busy during the weekends, especially on Friday nights.  They do offer the Fandango ticket service so if you can spare a few bucks you’ll miss the lines and be able to grab a good seat.  They also offer a lot of midnight showings for the big blockbusters, and show all of the 3D movies.

Laser Storm

Laser Storm has always been one of my favorite places to go with a group of friends since I was a little kid.  The actual arena is a bit small, about half the size of a typical gymnasium, and consists of hanging styrofoam dividers, flashing lights, smoke, and loud techno music.  I’ve seen the crowd vary from elementary school kids to military guys relaxing on some down time.  And with the low prices, it makes for a great mid-week activity for everyone.

Nestled in the top of the Hampshire Mall, right along side Interskate 91 Laser Storm is a great addition to a night at the movies or a day of skating next door.  In fact, you can even get up to Laser Storm by skating there, or you could use the elevator that is practically hidden in the food court.  Tuesday nights even offer a ‘fire til you tire’ deal where you can play unlimited games from 6:30-9:30.

Interskate 91

Interskate 91 North has been a staple of the Hampshire Mall for as long as I can remember.  In elementary and middle school it was the place to have a birthday party –  anyone who was anybody would have the back room reserved for the afternoon and invite all of their friends.  Combined with the famous laser tag arena next door, it provided for a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon for the kids, and the many shops in the mall gave the parents something to do too.  As time went on and I grew up, Interskate 91 became a great place to take girls out on a date: think dinner and a movie plus a few laps around the roller rink.

The hours are a bit odd, but when you realize the place is catered to younger kids still in grade school it makes more sense.  I’ve never been to a roller rink anywhere else, but the prices never seemed too outrageous – it runs about the cost of a movie at Cinemark downstairs.  Prices vary depending on the day because they run various specials throughout the week and you can rent a pair of skates or blades for about $5 if you don’t have your own pair (which they don’t charge you to use!).

Because Laser Storm is hooked up with Interskate 91, I’d suggest bringing a few extra bucks and working that in to your plans.  They also have a small arcade with some pretty gnarly prizes for the kids, so bring a few quarters as well.  If you’re not a great skater, don’t sweat it – it’s always someone’s first time here which means it won’t take too much work to accentuate your skills.  Don’t forget to check out their official website for current information on all their daily specials!
